We decided to go to the Melville Inn for a quick afternoon bite having been around Dobbies Garden Centre next door. Inside the decor was lovely, it was warm with low light and all in all a very cosy pub with a real open fire. We were there around 4.30pm so chose from the Lunch and Light Bites menu. We decided to just have starters and two side orders to share; breaded flat mushrooms with garlic dip, Tandoori chicken skewers, onion rings and chips. My mushrooms were quite tasty but were unfortunately just served on a sad looking bed of iceberg lettuce with the garlic dip spooned on beside them. I mention this because I have had this dish in many pubs and most of them serve their mushrooms with a nice small mixed salad (that you want to eat rather than it just being there for some greenery) and the dip in a separate bowl. My boyfriend’s chicken skewers were served on a large plate and looked very lost as there were only two of them and they were extremely small. They were sitting on top of some shredded cucumber with some flatbread beside them. To be honest I don’t know what the point of the flatbread was, other than as a filler due to the lack of chicken. The side dishes were fine and were decently sized portions.
While we were there the evening menu was put out. It had a wide choice of dishes and I have hope that the main courses would be nicer than their starter offerings but I’m not too sure I’d bother going back to find out.
