A friend and I walked into chez jules on Sunday night. The place was busy but we were welcomed cheerily. This site has hosted various restaurants over the years, several Italian style plus the city version of The Sizzling Scot. The decor is fairly bland but we were there to try the French food & wine.
So, actually the wine isn't particularly French. The list is short and we had a Merlot and a Cabernet - I think both were South American and both were reasonable. Whilst waiting to order, various freebies appeared including fresh bread, pickles, some meaty terrine and then some heavily dressed lettuce. This was a good starter in itself.
There were no meat starters on the menu so my carniverous friend had some sort of potato based bake. Quantity rather than quality seemed to be the verdict. I had mussels in white wine sauce. A tad bland I felt of the sauce, but the moules themselves were plump and tasty. For mains we both had ribeye with frites and pepper sauce. Excellent pepper sauce, fairly average thin style fries but excellent steaks - cooked rare as requested. Best of all at £9.95 this is good value for quality steak in the evening in the city centre. We finished our meal with some brie cheese that was nice and stinky.
So, chez jules has been reborn on Hanover Street. This is a welcome addition to the city centre and offers good value food in plentiful portions. The decor needs an uplift, the wine list doesn't inspire but the food is very good.

Great Steaks at a grear price (£10) with a Chef who knows what "rare" means.
