Tiger Lily
125 George Street, EH2 4JN, Edinburgh
from craig777 on July 30th, 2010 (1 day ago)
I went here for dinner last night and have to say was very impressed. Although Tiger Lily is probably the nicest (in terms of decor etc) place to go on George Street for drinks/food I rarely go there and it wasn’t until we got a 2-1 voucher that we thought about it. The menu had numerous options which I could have chosen with a huge variety of meat and fish dishes. My only complaint about the menu was a lack of veggie options, one of our party was veggie and the main was off for the day so the only other option was one of the starters as a main.
I had the sea bass with squid and chorizo and it was amazing! So tasting and just the right portion size for me, one of the best meals I have had in a while. 2 others went for the fillet steak and again they have said it is the best cut of meat they have had so far this year!! The veggie option was as I say a bit limited and I don’t think the portion was big enough compared to the sizes of other mains but I was told it was still enjoyable.
I think just now there are doing a 2-1 offer pretty much any night or meal of the week (people on George Street handing out vouchers most days) so it helps with the cost of the meal. Mains vary from £15-26 (steak being the only meal at the £26 range), starters tended to be based around £6-8.
If you haven’t been to Tiger Lily in a while then it’s worth a visit to try their menu out and well 2-1 makes it less of a blow to the wallet. They also have loads of summer drinks deals on just how which save a few more pennies!

Tried everything chicken on the menu. Fantastic chicken breast chunks in the chicken dishes and sauce to die for. Amazing value for money as the meals are large. Naan breads melt in the mouth. A few curry types never tried before and was amazed.

Aspen Bar and Grill
66-67 South Bridge, EH1 1LS, Edinburgh
from Jane Whitehead on July 28th, 2010 (3 days ago)
I was in Aspen for a friend's birthday. Biggest problem was the female staff including the so-called manager. The girl who served us was rude, patronising and obnoxious and definitely better suited for serving fries in McDonalds. When we asked to speak to the manager, she approached us very aggressively and instead of rectifying the problem defended her staff and blamed our behaviour. How that women could run a bar was beyond me. Only rectifying part was the male bartender was very polite and apologised for the incident and did make us some great cocktails. I would only go back if I knew that certain staff members were and weren't working.

Abdul's
22 Comiston Road, EH10 5QE, Edinburgh
from Sabine on July 28th, 2010 (3 days ago)
Every time I come to Edinburgh Abdul's is one of the highlights. We've tried several others over the years but we always come back to Abdul's. My favourites are the Kashmiri Chicken, the Kathmandu Chicken and the Lamb Saag (looks a bit like a cow pattie but it's soooooo good!).
Some time ago my friend, who lives just a couple of houses up the road from Abdul's, was thinking about moving - one of the reasons she decided to stay was Abdul's.

I was going to leave a review taking into consideration the price of the food however I find that whatever you order it is completely overpriced for what they charge.
I've ordered from here twice and on both occasions it has been a disappointment. The delivery took 1:30 on the first occasion for a burrito and on the second occasion 1:25. Staff seem polite however not particularly familiar with customer service. Chefs on the other hand must be pretty incompetent to make a simple burrito or burger... Tasteless, overcooked, badly proportioned, very very under seasoned (if at all)... Coming from a chef who actually quite enjoys Mexican food on my day off I'm sad to say this is the worst Mexican I've been to in Edinburgh. Actually, some of the worst service and food I've had in Edinburgh, especially considering the price. A for effort, sort of FAIL for actual execution.

Metropole Coffee House
29-33 Newington Road, EH9 1QR, Edinburgh
from Annie on July 26th, 2010 (5 days ago)
This is one of my favourite cafes in Edinburgh - the atmosphere is super relaxed with bohemian decor, and the staff are ALWAYS lovely! The soups are amazing, as is the fresh scones with clotted cream and jam and tea combo (all for only £3.50!). They have a lovely selection of good loose teas also. Busy over the weekends, but big enough to feel like you could curl up in the corner and read a book for hours - oh and there's free wifi!

BOOOOM... listen to me, I know what I am talking about - 27 yrs of hard core munching and still a slight size 8/ fat size 6. Either way, this curry house is rubbish by even a tramp's standards...
Key words: expensive, alright service (manager keeps giving evils), poor taste, guarantee excessive toilet time... no joke, boyfriend and friend and even... wait for this... the foodwarrior herself, were all taken down to sh*t town!
The travesty began with an extremely pricey plate of poppadoms. Seven pounds... were they made by truffle fed Oompa Loompas?!
We were completely conned as it was listed as 85p on the menu, that's it, with no indication how they charge. Turns out for 4 poppadoms and a tray of standard condiments, costs £6.95... margin of a zillion percent - that's evening robbery!!!
~£10 for drinks (2 little Cobra and an appletiser) but I am not one that would opt to save dosh to forgo good food - the basic requirement of my duty to this planet as a food warrior - (my persistence in going to my favorite Szechuan place in London despite repeated loo time, each time justify my dedication!).
BUT down to business, the food was nothing to write home about. My yadeeyadda masala - impressively extensive name, low quality didn't even taste of any spice, the sauce was blitzed to resemble what you see later in your loo... no veg in sauce, your usual bits of tomato and onion...
Saag gosht... ass boshed (enough said).
A korma borema - if you can't be authentic at least do a good western korma. Even my Chinese grandma can do a better job Bland as water and visually revolting - waterblown chicken floating on watery yellow soup. Portion size: gourmet style. But again I don't want too much of this anyway.
If you're going to cook rubbish, you better watch your back cos FW is in town...
Remember guys, average is never good enough.
Till next time... FW on a crusade.

Absolutely dreadful!
Very slow service (1.5 hours to get main), food lukewarm at best and all tasteless.
Desserts equally poor, do not waste your money...

The Kitchin
78 Commercial Quay, EH6 6LX, Edinburgh
from Tane Piper on July 22nd, 2010 (1 week ago)
We went to the Kitchin at the end of May for a friends graduation party. While we as a group had a fun time, the actual dining experience was rather poor.
The evening itself was a gift to us from out friend mother, so while we didn't pay anything personally the whole evening wasn't as we expected.
My friend - who is a vegetarian - ended up paying over £40 for what amounted to a bowl of steamed vegetables. And to add insult to injury, when they were presenting it they made a big deal about it.
Her sister ordered Scallops for the starter, and while eating it found a bit of plastic in the food. She got one of the waiters over who took it away but never apologised - it took her speaking to another waiter to get one and to have the dish taken off the bill.
On top of that the service was rather pretentious and the food, for the price, wasn't that amazing - the only saving grace was the excellent selection of wine.
To be honest we would have had a better time (and cheaper) in Chop Chop next door.
